What to know before you choose
Unmanaged or managed?
Unmanaged switches just work and suit homes and small offices. Smart/managed switches add VLANs to separate cameras from staff, voice/video priority and per-port monitoring.
What is PoE?
PoE sends power and data over the same cable, so IP cameras and access points need no socket nearby. Check the total PoE budget (watts) covers every device.
Switches for CCTV
Dedicated surveillance switches reach 250 m instead of 100 m, recognise cameras and can power-cycle a frozen camera.
How many ports?
Count current devices and add 30% for growth. In businesses, SFP ports allow fibre links between floors and buildings.
