Quick buying guide
What to know before you choose
10/100 or Gigabit?
A 2–4MP IP camera uses under 10 Mbps, so 10/100 is plenty for cameras and cheaper. Gigabit matters for modern access points, the NVR uplink in large systems, and PCs.
Port count
Match PoE ports to cameras plus 20% for growth: 4 for a 4-camera system, 8 for 8, 16–24 for projects — and make sure there is an uplink for the NVR and router.
PoE budget
Add up camera consumption (about 5–7 W for a standard camera, 15–25 W for PTZ) and choose a switch with a comfortable margin above the total.
Distant cameras
Switches with Extend mode reach up to 250 m instead of 100 m. Beyond that we use fibre or a wireless link.
